How to use dip switches with a modeler and cab

Hi,
I just bought a fryette ps2a and I’m running a quad cortex into the fx return and the speaker out to a 212 orange ppc cab(16 ohm).
I’m wondering how I can get the dip switches to function? The dip switches function with my tube amps running into the amp in.
But not when the modeler is connected to the effects return or the line in?
The cab has to jacks assuming its parallel?

I ran the speaker out from the fryette to the 16 ohm cab (8 ohms on the fryette)
And a second speaker cable coming out the parallel speaker jack on the 212 cab to the amp in jack on the fryette at 16 ohms and the dip switches (flat/deep/bright) worked with the modeler connected to the effects return.
Am I going to fry the power amp?

Hi @Playmorebass welcome to the forum!

As you suspected, those toggle switches only operate on the power signal from your amp (the one that connects to PS-2A AMP IN).

What you are doing sounds a little like self-attenuation mode, like this video,

I think you have connected like this?

This is very similar to what we call self-attenuation mode, but rather than being a silent recording configuration, the reactive load is in parallel with the speaker. I never thought about this before… but yes, as long as you set the impedance correctly, which I think you did!

  • We want the SPEAKER SELECTOR (this is the PS-2A’s tube amp output impedance) to be at 8 Ohms.
  • To get AMP IN impedance to 8 Ohms with a 16 Ohm cab in parallel with the PS-2A reactive load, we need to set the AMPLIFIER SELECTOR to 16 Ohms.
  • The power will be shared equally between the reactive load and the speaker, so you will get an 3dB drop naturally.
  • If a bit of mis-match is accetable you could increase one and decrease the other to adjust the split in power (increase or decrease the volume).

Thank you for the fast response!
Yes I noticed a small dip in volume and that is ok by me.(The ability to shape my tone further is worth it :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:)
My modeler and preamp pedals are so much more user tone friendly now. They sounded great before but now with this trick they sound legendary!
Just a thought, can you post a how to video on showing the steps to do this for those that don’t know. I think a lot of people will be even more pleased with this trick especially for those only using modelers or preamps.
God Bless you and have a great day!

Yes, this is novel; I have not seen that one before  I will mention it next time I talk with the shop

Hi quick question regarding this setup

I have a pre amp pedal which I’m going into the fx return, and a 8ohm 2x10 cab

I have the 50watt version with the second speaker out. Could I run a speaker lead from this straight to the amp in to access the reactive load? What ohm should I set the fryette amp in and cab out at to achieve this?

Hi @Graham270896 and welcome to the forum,

Yes, it’s called self-attenutation mode.
