I was playing my amp in 50 watt mode for about 20 minutes with everything fine, then suddenly it just started sounding very ‘off’. It’s not the cables/guitar/amps, I’ve singled it out to the ps-100
This is setup for silent mode, green switch on, power amp off and the line out is being used.
With the switch on deep, there is a loud mechanical buzzing sound coming from the physical unit, the line out is loud and the midrange is very open. Warm and flat are very quiet.
What’s the next step? Should I open it and take a look? The unit is only a few months old, this is new behavior.
Does the buzzing you hear depend on the volume level of your guitar amplifier?
Some buzzing is totally normal. You will also hear the similar sounds from your guitar amplifier when recording silently; both the power transformer and the output transformer have a buzz.
It also makes sense that this goes away in flat and warm mode. Deep mode is the most “reactive” and the PS-100’s inductor sees more of your amplifier’s power output.
This sounds normal to me. But please attach an audio clip or drop a YouTube video link so we can hear what you hear. It won’t sound to us like we are in the room due to compression but it’s a good start.
Thanks for coming back with the info and video; very helpful!
Yes, I see what you mean. First thing I would investigate is whether or not this is due to mounting or having other things in the rack. It almost sounds too loud to be the inductor; I suspect that the usual small amount of inductor vibration is somehow being transferred to something that can really move and this is what is causing the noise.
If it turns out you need a new inductor, we can of course sort that out. But before we get there, could you mechanically isolate the power station? Like, put it on the carpet and make a very simple setup with your guitar, amp, power station and speaker?
Also, where are you based and when did you purchase the power station and from which dealer? Feel free to private message me those last details so you don’t have to post personal info.
I appreciate the reply. The deep setting sounds blown out to me, let me know if this is what I should expect. I had it on deep for months but it sounds like the mid range is wide open and there’s no bass to me now. I bought it new in late march and can PM the details if there’s something out of the ordinary with it.
It seems to work as expected in the warm setting and sounds okay
The wide open kind of blown out sound is harder to pickup in the youtube video. The only other thing I can think of is something in the signal chain doesn’t like the extra bass all of a sudden, but before the rattle sounded much closer the the warm setting rattle.
I’m just trying to figure out if this is normal for the deep mode. It seems to sound blown out now, like an eq lift of sorts with a good amount of rattle coming from the chassis. The difference is much more noticeable with out the audio compression in the vid
It’s hard to say really. I’ve never noticed too much rattle when I had a PS-100.
Is this new behaviour the PS-100 is displaying? If so, then this is likely an issue. Are you interested in requesting an RMA for getting the shop to investigate and replace?
I’ve pretty much only had it on the deep setting since I got it but some days my amps would sound off. I tore up the pedalboard and found a couple bad pedals but I’m plugged straight into the zmacs here. The bass seems removed in the deep mode and the mids are very open and loud.
Everything actually sounds pretty good in warm mode. I don’t remember it having so much audible rattle with the bass missing in deep mode until the past few weeks. I mostly run the amps in half power 50 watt mode with the volume around 4/5
Let me know if it just seems like I’m hearing things wrong or if something seems off with the unit.
Yes that does not sound right … I mean it’s very fuzzy on the top and weird in the bottom. Do the problems go away in flat mode? The mechanical vibration issue is one I’ve not encountered before. Recommend getting it looked at
