It’s time for new power tubes for my Ultra Lead. Which, if any current production KT88 would be recommended? Or would going to 6550’s be a better route with current tube availability??
Hi @Chese311
We currently use Sovtek and JJ 6550s. We also use Psvane from time to time.
Tube supply seems to always be in a state of flux – but that is the current situation.
PS. All of these exhibit good reliability overall, but the Sovteks can cause crackling sounds initially.
So You guys are using the 6650’s over the KT88 huh? And just for concrete verification it’s an older Ultra Lead with EQ. Pre Fryette badging
KT88 are fine too, but right now Fryette products all ship with 6550s. They are closely related and interchangeable in the PS-100, for example. If you prefer KT88 (as that is what is in there at the moment), that is fine. Also, consider the same manufacturers.
Are you guys getting better results with current production 6650’s over available KT88?
Also your thoughts on the current Chinese made KT-88 STR from Ruby Tubes?
Thank you
I honestly don’t think there is much in it. There are only 2 or 3 factories that make the world’s tubes. Ruby Tubes rebrands these after testing, which is a very useful service. You just need to try and see. Maybe someone with hands-on experience might chime in.
