Sound City Master 100 — Jumping Channels vs Y Cable?

Hey all
I’ve been spending time with the Sound City Master 100 and had a question about the quad input setup. The manual mentions jumping Inputs 1 and 4 for humbuckers and 2 and 3 for single coils, but I’m curious if anyone can elaborate on the tonal differences between those combinations and what the general thought process or best practices are when choosing which inputs to jump.

I also saw a video of Joe Barresi using a Y cable to feed both channels simultaneously instead of the classic input-jumping method. Does anyone know how that compares in terms of signal flow or tone? Are there advantages to using a Y cable versus jumping? Or are they functionally the same with slight differences in gain structure or impedance?

Would love to hear how others approach this amp and how you’re dialing in tones using the input section.

Hi Sampura,

In the Joe Barresi video, a Y-cable was used because there weren’t any channels to jump. We urge you to experiment to find your sound. Try a Y-cable, try switching the inputs to see what works for you best and fits your gear. There are different sounds to be had there. Make sure you update this post after you’ve tried it so others can hear your perspective. Have an amazing day!

Actually, Barresi’s Hiwatt amp does have two channels, Brilliant and Normal, like a four-holer, but only one jack per channel. Thus the Y cable to access both.

So basically, your SC 100 amp has more options for combining the two. Beyond that minor distinction, I recommend you do what works for you, and I find rhat my opinion changes depending on a variety of circumstances, so there’s no hard rule there.

Just using one jack at a time works well also. It’s just a matter of taste. Just keep in mind that the top two jacks have slightly less gain than the bottom two, which is the opposite of the Marshall config.

I apologize to you both on that one. I meant to say it didn’t have any jumpable inputs and wrote channels. Thank you for catching that Dave.

I’m back to say that after a few shootouts on every cab with each input possible, I’ve decided I like plugging into #3 and jumping 1 and 4. #2 is a close second, but 3 is just a little cleaner and pokes out a little bit more. Any insight to what’s going on with that preference and signal flow?

It’s been real nice running this guy next to my Orange AD140… which is my favorite amp ever. Similar vibe with the Master 100. I’m really enjoying this amp!

Hey Sam,

1 & 3 are the lower level inputs, while 2 and 4 are hotter.

I prefer plugging into 4 and jumping 2 & 3. That makes the Brill side dominant, meaning the most gain available and a little more mid-forward overall.

You’re doing the opposite, which makes the Normal side dominant, but lower overall gain.

That perfectly aligns with your preference for the cleaner attack with a little added brightness on top.

Dave

Extremely enlightening! Thanks for this!
