Silent Mode Magic?

Hello, i’ve been using the PS100 for almost 2 years now without issue. Really enjoy the product but have never really used it in the Silent Mode application because, truthfully, i don’t understand how this could ever work/be safe

can someone explain the science behind how this is even possible? Leave both switches off, and really just turn the power on if you’re using a high gain amp? My understanding is that leaving the second switch on bypass, doesn’t even use tubes?

Just trying to better understand something that feels like magic hahaha

Hi SlghING,

Welcome to the forum!

No magic here, just science! The reactive load works without power. The reason for the power with high output amplifiers is so the fan can help dissipate heat within the unit. You are absolutely right, in bypass the power section of the unit is not running. If you are wanting a silent recording experience, you don’t need the power section. With the unit in bypass with no speaker cable connect to a cabinet, it has an open load protection circuit that makes sure your amplifier sees the reactive load in the Power Station. No smoke and mirrors, just incredible designs. Your amplifier is always safe.

I hope this helps.

Thank You,

Terry

Thanks Terry, couple of quick follow-ups:

  1. Is there somewhere I can go to read about the science of how it works, in further detail? Has Steve Fryette done a vide on this by chance that you could point me to?

  2. I’ve been using the full features of the PS-100 to send a cranked amp signal into the PS-100, then keep the volume at low levels through a 4x12…works great, sounds good, feels right…

If i’m understanding the picture of the Power Load IR posted below correctly…I could do the same silent recording as I do with the PS-100, but send the non-IR unbalanced signal line out (marked A) into the line 1 of my apollo twin, while simultaneously have my headphones plugged in (marked B) and hear me playing my amp through an IR?

So i get the benefit of hearing a sound with an IR, while recording the raw DI into Logic? I don’t think I can do that with my Power Station…

Hi SlghING,

So the first video is about the reactive load. It talks about what it is and what the difference between and attenuator and a reactive load is.

The second video is about the silent recording of amplifiers.

Now, as far as recording with the Power Station vs the PL-IR. Yes, you can hear the sound of the IR through headphones while you are actively playing with the PL-IR. You are right that there are no IR’s in the Power Station and you cannot monitor a speaker simulated line out of it. You can however send a line out of the Power Station to an interface to use with a standalone IR unit or software IR’s.

I hope this helps.

Thank You,

Terry
