Wondering if there’s safe way to gauge how much a PS100 can push speakers. Is the PS100 safe at max volume with say, a 2x12 cab rated at combined 120-130w? Or is it similar to 100w amp that is recommended to be used with speakers at twice that power rating.
I also had the idea to see what my 100w NMV Marshall would sound like through a pair of 2x15w Celestion Alnico Blue speakers. But again, not sure if there’s a safe measurable way to do this without blowing something expensive…
Welcome to the forum!
It’s really about playing volume. A lower powered (30-50W) amp that’s maxed out can easily blow a pair of 15W speakers.
A 100W amp at low volume will not blow those speakers just because the amp says “100W” on it.
You’re going to hear the speakers complain when you get them to the threshold of overload.
Dimeing the amp through the PS-100 will help protect the speakers up to a point. But at sufficient volume, such as rehearsal or small gig volume, it could damage those 15W speakers.
If you hear cone cry or a rattling sound in the cab, switch to a higher powered cab.
