Rack mounting question

Hi,

I am considering rack-mounting a PS2/A with a SYN-2, in a 3U case (SKB). Will the 3U provide enoufh ventilation or should I consider an additional empty unit? If 3u is enough, would you still recommend mounting the PS2/A above the SYN-2 rather than below it? Note that I don’t expect to play under extreme temperature.

Also, and that was perhaps wishfull thinking, but was something mentioned about about a rack mount kit of some sort for the GPDI/IR in one of the latest Malcontents episodes?

Cheers and thanks,
Nick

Hello, There is no absolute answer to this since the amount of heat that the PS-2A will generate is highly dependent on how hard it is pushed by your particular settings on both your amp and the PS-2A. That being said, you can use the 3U case as long as there is sufficient airflow around the case itself when in use. It’s always best to place the PS-2A at the bottom of the rack so the heat can rise up and away from it. This may cause your SYN-2 to get a bit hotter, but not so much as to worry about it. So as long as you are using the rack in modest temperature and humidity conditions, you’ll have no problems with overheating. An external fan for times when things are hotter can also help greatly. No plans for a rack mount kit for the GPDI/IR. We’ll probably introduce a shelf type of mounting solution. Stay tuned…Cheers! Gil

Thanks a lot Gil. I will be mostly using the PS2 as a power amp to the SYN-2 (so no power soaking) and even outdoors never push the amp anywhere near its limits. With the PS2 rack mount leaving a half-decent amount of space around the PS2 in the 2U space, and from what you are saying I think it should be fine in a 3U rack with the SYN-2.

Thanks also about the shelf type of mounting solution - indeed this is what I had heard on the stream - great news

Might want to add two rack spaces for adding the GPDI-IR in the future. I usually add a othe space for a power strip or effects.

I know… choices. And I secretly and unrealistically hope the “shelf” solution will allow for both Syn-1 and GPDI to fit. But I must say like the 3U for its “amp head” size & transport.
