Hi, i just got a PS-2 and i have a noob question just want to make sure im understanding something correctly. First, i CAN use this with class A/B solid state amps such as the orange super crush correct? Second, I wanted to confirm that using the switches on the back I can mismatch impedances with both solid state and tube amps, for example I have 4 ohm cabs, a couple of my amps only go to 8 ohm. I can set the amp switch to 8ohm and the cab to 4ohm and im safe to proceed correct? But only in active mode? in bypass mode ill be mismatched?
@Lungsman welcome to the forum!
There is very little point in doing this and you need to be careful. There is not really a concept of impedance matching when using solid state amps because their output impedance is typically low, unless they are doing a “valvestate” current feedback trick.
The main issue is that unlike tube amps, the power output of solid-state amps increases as the impedance goes down (tube amps have an output transformer, which means the power is the same no matter the speaker impedance). You can see this on the specs page.
So if you do this, then restrict yourself to 16 Ohms or 8 Ohms. 4 Ohms is not supported by the amp and might also exceed the Power Station’s power rating.
Don’t do this for the reasons mentioned above. Some people like the sound of mismatched speakers and amps; I generally think it’s OK to mismatch by one and not push the amp too hard.
I would use the line out on the Orange into the line in on the PS. It’s basically a wet/dry rig.
From the manual…
THE POWER STATION IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE WITH SOLID STATE AMPLIFIERS THAT USE CURRENT FEEDBACK.
Thanks, i was thinking about that, the supercrush has an xlr out but id be able to get xlr to 1/4 in for the line in on the PS2? probably the best way to do it.
The Orange effects loop out might work to the line in or effects loop return on the PS.
Since the line out has a speaker emulation on the Orange it might give better results for your application.
I would also compare the amp without the PS at all. I dont use the PS with most of my amps. Its about getting the best results for what I am doing.
I have a OR50 and Rockerverb 100. Definitely like the Orange gear.
