I was using the unit to create quad cortex captures.
I assume this is outgassing but unsure why the unit would be doing that as I was using it as a load for a 100 watt Diezel amp with the MV at about 9 o’clock so nothing nuclear although the diezel is very loud.
I immediately switched it off and the smoke stopped and because I am not a smart man I switched it back on and tried using it as a power amp only and ut worked fine with no smoke.
I did not have the fan engaged (manual states power handling is 50% down with no fan engaged but as I say I was using a 100 watt amp)
Im guessing this isnt normal but I have noticed multiple other people with the same issue so do I need to go to a tech?
Yeah so continued not smart man approach running it as described above with fan on = no smoke so maybe the diezel is just too much to run without the fan.
Assume 2 seconds of outgassing isnt going to require a service?
Yes, it could mean it needs a service. It sounds like a capacitor or resistor might have blown up. It really depends on the level of damage, but opening the unit is the only way to understand the next step.
We could do some debugging to determine the damage if you want before deciding on service options (local tech or sending it to Fryette). Do you have a local tech you trust?
Yeah I live near Flynn amps in Glasgow UK and he us very good so if you think that would be best ill drop it off with him.
As i say it was very brief and only when it was used without the fan engaged and seems fine with the fan on now.
Happy to do that if thats what you recommend but I would suggest the manual is not explicit about what a “high powered tube amp” is in terms of when the fan should be engaged or not
Yes, I think it would be worth getting them to take a look at it; it should be easy for them to check for any burn damage and replace any damaged components. Please send a screenshot of the bad advice in the manual, and we can correct it.
Diezel Hagen is 100 watt and I had the master at 9 o’clock so hardly cranked. It also says earlier in the manual tthat Power handling is halved without the fan so my assumption was 100 watt head at low mv setting should be fine. Maybe not!
Probably in the factory test conditions, derating by 50% was reasonable when they tested it. The crucial thing is temperature, of course, and that will vary from setup to setup. I’m in favour of updating this section in the manual to either remove the specifics or add advice on the environment, such as room ventilation and duration of play.
My personal take and what I usually say here is that I’d use it as a load box with 20W amps, and for everything else, I’d have the fan running. That is probably too conservative. Like I say, it’s really about the temperature the componets reach.
Yeah no worries, to be honest I usually have the fan on to be on the safe side but its been fine without any time ive done it up till now. Lesson learned!
