PS100: I can’t get unity - volume levels in ‘bypass’ are the same as in ‘operate’

Hi,

After a long time of saving and coveting, I finally got myself a PS 100 tone shape and attenuate my Hot Rod Deville 212.

Bought from Reverb from a top seller, I got it home and plugged it in and while it does a great job of attenuating (and I think holds the tone of my dialled up combo). It doesn’t sound much difference in bypass mode.

No matter how high I dial the volume I can’t get unity (not even close), but all other functions that I expect should work in operate to work. E.G. Channel switch, tone, switches and dials (although I think the difference between these are really subtle?)).

Any help and advice would be really welcome!

Hey Tele, welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you can attenuate, but not boost. Is that correct?

If so, try setting the front panel level button to the LO (button out) position.

Let me know how that works.

Dave

Thanks Dave

That is correct - I can attenuate (@~95db full PS100 volume on operate when the level button is set to ‘hi’), but the bypass is a level ~80db even with my amp set at between 6&7 on the volume dial (none of the functions work on this setting, which I think is expected).

If I set the level to ‘Lo’ I get ~70db.

Let’s try this another way:

Start with your amp set to a normal volume and connected to the PS-100 amp in jack.
Connect your cab to the PS-100 speaker out.
Set both the impedance select switches to 4 ohms,
PS-100 set to Bypass mode.
Front panel level switch in the LO position

Now complete this sentence:

When I switch the PS-100 to Operate mode I have to turn the PS volume to X (number on the clock face) to equal the same volume as in Bypass mode.

Thanks,

Dave

With all the above connected as you described, with both amp and speaker set to 4ohms, I have to turn the PS volume to 2 o’clock on a clock face (I guess 7 on a volume dial) to equal the same volume as in Bypass mode.

Hi - just as an update:

I’ve tried removing pedals from the FX loop, with no change to the problem. In doing so, I discovered the FX Level ‘Hi’ ‘Lo’ button - I switched this from ‘Hi’ to ‘Lo’, and it did improve the BRITE and WARM setting changes (and presence and depth dialled changes) when on operate, but still no Unity or ability to boost. Bypass remains as before - the volume is much lower that that produced by my amp.

On the possibility that we might need to see that one, please email the following to support@fryette.com:

Thank you.

Thanks Dave - just sent the email
