PS-2a Silent Mode - a bit unclear regarding tone controls being active

Hey new here. Been using the PS-2a for about a month and it’s amazing. I had 2 OX’s sold one, next one is going soon. I love the adjustment options for bright/warm, presence, depth and the attenuation using a mic’d up 4 x 12 -it is fantastic (I have a Marshall 1960TL, Mesa 4 x 12). I’m also using an amp head switcher to feed the PS-2a (Friedman BE100delux, Synergy 50, Plexi 1959 100wt, Bogner shriva and fender deluxe reverb HW. I do find myself more often in my control room using the Line out (TRS) to my Burl A/D input into an IR loader (Genome from 2 notes) and it’s great. in reading about silent mode It says you have the controls (mentioned above bright, Dpeth presence) available. I’m sure this is a simple thing but I wanted to ask the forum gods. I don’t hear them active from the Line out (it seems they are supposed to be based on the manual and some posts?) So do I need to unplug the Speaker cable from the rear of the unit to access the tone control portion of the PS-2? I’m also gong to switch over the XLR out (but that won’t affect what i’m asking about). or is it a matter of “operate” being out or on/off being off. (if operate is off does it not expect to see a speaker load attached? sorry if this is the 79th time this has been asked. thansk in advance. - Neil

the flat/brite/edge and flat/warm/deep switches are active during silent mode, but the presence/depth knobs are not. the latter affect the power amplifier portion of the power station so they won’t be active during silent mode, whereas the former affect the reactive load portion of the unit. thus, you should hear a significant difference when adjusting the flat/brite/edge and flat/warm/deep switches during silent mode, but adjusting the presence/depth knobs shouldn’t make a difference.

Hey, thank you very much. I appreciate the info. Just to be 100% clear I should hear the dip switches regardless of a speaker cable being plugged into the rear of the ps2a or not?

or does it need to not have a speaker cable plugged in for those switches to be active.

I understand the power section better now
. Thank you again..

the only time those switches will not be active is when the unit is simultaneously in “bypass” and there is a speaker cable plugged in to the speaker out. this is because in that case, the amp in would be directly connected to the speaker out, so neither the reactive load nor the power amp would be part of the circuit.

when there is a speaker cable plugged in but the unit is in “operate” the switches will be active. likewise, when there is no speaker cable plugged in, the switches will also be active.

Got it! Thank you for taking the time to explain this so well. I did see a video on the forums were you can patch the amp in/out to the input to get access to power section as well (I have to watch that a few times to make sure I’d be doing it correctly). Great help much appreciated! Neil
