Ps-2, silent recording with fan

I’ve been using my powerstation mainly for re-amping and as a poweramp for a rack, but now I want to experiment with the silent recording feature.

As far as I’ve gathered, I can use the unit totally passive, without a cab connected. So speaker signal out from the amp to the PS-2A and then send the line out to my interface.

But if I connect a higher wattage tube amp to the unit and turn it up, could I keep the same connections and only turn on the green switch so the fan is doing its job as well? From which wattage on would you connect running the fan?

Hi @SNDR and welcome to the forum!

Yup, that’s right.

For higher power amps the unit needs to be powered because the cooling fan needs to activate.

There are a few issues with this…

In Bypass your amplifier is no longer connected to the PS-2’s reactive load, you must connect something to SPRK OUT.

So this is no longer silent recording mode.

However, if you do this…

Your amp will connect to the reactive load, so it’s safe. But the PS-2’s power amp must be connected to a speaker!

If you want the fan on and to use the PS-2 without a speaker, then I suggest turning the volume knob all the way down. This leaves it unloaded but provided no power is being generated by the tubes, there is nothing to dissipate in the load. TAKE CARE WHEN DOING THIS YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR POWER STATION IF YOU TURN UP THE VOLUME AND USE IT UNLOADED.

Hi Dan, thanks for the informative answer!!

Ok I will keep a cab plugged in whenever I am using the fan.

Sometimes I hear some sound with the volume on 0, but I could always put a passive volume pedal in the loop to knock down further the volume going to the power amp.

I know actual power differs from amp to amp, but from which wattage rating on would you recommend using the fan?

Hi @SNDR

Probably wise to keep it plugged in.

I have a feeling that the sound you are hearing is signal bleed coupling directly from the input to the speaker (i.e. not going through the PS-2A’s amp). But if the volume control in the FX loop works, then I’d be happy to know.

It’s hard to estimate the Wattage when going fanless. I’ve also thought around 30W. It is really dependent on the temperature of the resistors. If you start to smell bad things, then stop.

Thanks Dan,

Yeah my lowest wattage amp is 30Watts so, I guess I will just keep it on for this purpose, rather than risk anything, thanks for clearing this up, since I couldn’t get all the information just from the manual.
