PS-2 and DB booster in FX Loop

Hi! I get that the PS-100 has 2 channels and one of those can be for a boost in DB’s. But, if I get the PS-2, can I put a DB boost (like an Xotic EP Boost) in the PS-2 FX loop for more volume or am I just distorting the PS-2 tubes / messing up the quality of the sound? AND, if it doesn’t doesn’t distort the tubes, does the PS-2 do its attenuation job and not allow a boost in DB’s? Does this make sense? Is there a way get a DB boost from the PS-2 or do I just get the PS-100? TY!!

Hello and welcome to the Fryette Forum! Yes, you can do that. That is a clever way of creating a volume boost with the PS-2A. As long as you are not maxing out the PS-2A’s internal power amp output, there should be plenty of headroom to allow for a signal boost without adding any significant clipping to the signal, again unless you have the output volume of the PS-2A near it’s maximum output level. Perhaps consider using a really clean booster such as the Xotic Super Sweet or Super Clean. Of course there are many good clean boost pedals available and any one of them should work just fine. Cheers! Gil

So I got a PS-2A and it works great on my Marshall. Now I’m interested in another for a vintage Fender. I’ve seen several posts in your Forums about Super Reverbs and other vintage Fender amps and the ohm issue. So far, I don’t see a clear answer and am mostly reading math in relation to speaker ohms and number of speakers. In an effort to get the proper answer without math - if I get another Power Station, what happens if the amp is 2 ohms? Does it work with 2 ohms or do I need a Dr Z device in the middle (not happening) or is it not advisable to use the PS with a 2 ohm amp? Is there another question I’m not asking that would solve this? thx!

Hi Fryetterookie,

There definitely isn’t an Ohm issue. The Power Station has a 2/4 Ohm switch, and it can handle 2 Ohms without an issue. A lot of what you see is based on the Power Station not having a dedicated 2 Ohm setting and there are people figuring that it won’t sound or work the same without it. That’s just not the case at all.

The first thing I will say is, try it. Don’t spend money and time on extra gear until you have used the gear you already have in that manner and have found an issue. The biggest part is sound and feel. If it has the sound you want, and the feel you need, there is absolutely no need to purchase another piece of gear.

I hope that helps.

Thank You,

Terry
