PS-100 stopped making sound

I am using a Quad Cortex into the PS-100 for live shows. I’m running it into the FX Rtrn. I think it sounds a little better that way to me.

I used it at rehearsal. Then I got to the show, set up for soundcheck, tested that everything worked, waited 5 minutes to line check, and when my turn came there was silence.

  • Everything is lit up and the tubes look fine to me.
  • I checked the mains fuse. It looks fine.
  • I tried running into the Line In. Still no sound.
  • Internal fuse looks fine.
  • I also tried using the unit as an attenuator and it does pass signal when in BYPASS but once in OPERATE it goes silent.

I’m not sure what else to look for.

Hi @Rizzo and welcome to the forum!

Sorry this dropped out on stage. You have done some good debugging work, but please take this step by step and follow this list:

Also make sure you are using the top TO SPKR output, this must be used first!

If you get to the end, I would then consider swapping out the power tubes for another set if you have.

I tried all of the above. I will drop it with my amp tech here in Nashville.

Thank you.

It looks like it was the internal fuse. My tech had to look very close to even tell it had burned out. I couldn’t even see it. Fired up. Now I guess I’ll order some new tubes or I think I may already have a matched pair of JJ 6550s. Or do you guys recommend replacing them with the Sovteks that came with the unit?

Thanks for the help.

Yes that can be tricky to see, I normally measure those with a multimeter, but not something everyone has. Great, glad you are back. Yes, any matched pair will do.

Forgot to ask, should I change the phase inverter tube as well?

It’s probably not the phase inverter, as preamp tubes have longer life than power tubes. It does not hurt to have a backup in stock. But I’d do the power tubes first and see.

As I was changing the tubes I noticed that the power tubes are literally a hair away from the back panel. In the video of the the PS-2 tube change it looks quite a gap. Are the PS-100 tubes supposed to be that close?

Hi Rizzo,

It’s tight in there, but it looks normal to me!

Excellent. Thanks for all the info. It’s back up and rippin’.
