Power Station 100 Failure

Just received my PS 100 today. I played through it for about 5mins and noticed the sound got very thin. When I went over to the unit I notice the left power tube glowing bright red before a sudden pop (through the speaker) and then the unit went silent. My amp still works great but the PS 100 has no sound. It still powers on but no audible sound anymore.

Hello Gallowsp and welcome to the forum!

I’m really sorry about this, but it seems the tubes need to be replaced. Essentially, we have had a bad batch of tubes that defeated our QA process and tended to fail in the field. We have updated our QA process and also worked with the tube manufacturer to do the same. They are now sending tubes we are happier with.

Where did you purchase this from and what is your country?

Ok, I understand. I purchased the unit from Guitar Center here in the US.

Do y’all have a set of replacement tubes for the PS100 y’all can send? This was a new product purchase from Guitar Center.

Hi Gallowsp,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Can you please post a photo of inside the PS-100? We need to clearly see the tubes and the Ip number on the TESTED & MATCHED label before we can send out replacements.

I try and get all the information here before getting you to fill out the form.

Dan,

Here is the IP # Photo requested. I also noticed the small fuse on the circuit board was blown and attached a photo of it as well.

Dan,

I know we’re in the process of getting some replacement tubes out, but I had an additional question. I like to have back up tubes for all my equipment in the event of tube failures. Ive been doing some reading and noticed there isn’t any biasing that needs to be done on the PS100. What brand or brands of matched 6550 power tubes do y’all recommend that I could have as backups that would meet y’all’s spec for the PS100?

Hi Gallowsp,

See here for that What 6550s do you recommend?

You need a matched pair and for your PS-100, they should have a Ip (plate current) rating around 50mA.

Also, see here too What fuses do I need for the Power Station PS-2 and PS-100?

Hey Dan,

I recieved the new tubes and looks like everything is up and running good after installation.

I got a backup pair of matched JJ 6550CZ tubes and the pair states PC 16. I didn’t see any specs when I was buying so I hoped for the best being they were at least a recommended brand. You stated PC around 50mA. Do you think these will still work or are they too far out of spec?

Dan,

Here is a photo for reference above. Maybe I’m missing something?

Hey Dan,
I also bought6 my PS-100 at Guitar Center about 3 weeks ago. After about a week of loving this thing I experienced a low hum that got progressively louder and then a small pop and nothing. I also noticed that the area near the tubes was running particularly hot. Never checked if it still worked in standby as I simply let iot cool down, boxed it up and brought it back to guitar center. They are currently having it serviced by the company that does their repairs as I have a 2 year warranty on it. My question is ,if it is a blown internal fuse stemming from a bad Tube and they simply replace the fuse it might happen again. Is it possible to get a new set of tubes from you guys (6551) and some internal fuses. Like I said, I love this unit but would like to be prepared if it happens again…hopefully it wont.
Thanks,
Nunzio

Sorry…I meant 6550’s…

Hey,

PC is plate current and TC is transconductance. I don’t think you can relate the PC number to the Fryette number because the test conditions are probably not the same.

Guitar Centre’s people should be able to do this properly as part of the warranty repair they are offering you. They can always contact us if they need to.

I’d like to send it to you guys. It’s only a week old- how do I have you guys look at it and repair it. The internal fuse is blown I have photos of the inside…what’s next?
