Is there a sound difference that you get from pushing a PS-2 and the GPDI/IR? I want to get some nice power amp saturation for synergy DS module and I was wondering if I will get a better sound with 2 PS-2 (one of them self attenuating) or a GPDI/IR (synergy module into fx loop and pushing the master) and a PS-2
Hi @Sebastian_ga3 welcome to the forum!
It’s really subjective. But people do indeed use the PS-2 for power amp compression; see here.
The GPDI/IR is a guitar amp, and its power stage has a certain sound.
I’m sorry I’m not familiar enough to be able to compare the two.
The GPDI / IR sounds great for power amp saturation, and very easy to dial in the right amount. But given that it’s also got a whole tube preamp section built in, it’s probably overkill for just that use.
I’ve heard Steve Mention that he owns the patent on this low-wattage power stage thing that is now being used in a variety of Synergy modules and other products (Tone King Imperial pre). Since Fryette also seems to have perfected the whole reactive load + IR thing, it would be really cool to see a stand alone low-wattage power amp >> reactive load >> IR loader DI device (basically a power load IR with the low-wattage tube power amp part included). I think it fills a gap in the market. I know I’d be a day 1 buyer. Right now if I want to add a power amp and IR to my various preamps, I have to go with the digital power amp sims that are built into various IR loaders.
Can’t you just plug into the effects return on the GPDI-IR to achieve what you want ?
That´s what I’m planning but I wanted to check if is worth it to go for the 2 PS-2 or 1 GPDI-IR and a PS-2
