No Dynamics light with Direct out connected

Hello!
I noticed this morning upon connecting the “Direct Out” XLR on my GPDI/IR to my interface… my Dynamics light becomes completely non-functional… regardless of level or what other connections I have. As soon as I unplug the Direct Out XLR. it lights back up. I am using an XLR to TS cable, if that makes a difference. Is this by design(and why) or is it a malfunction?

Thank you for your time!

I believe AI might have solved it:
Yes, the cable itself is causing the problem.

Because an XLR to TS cable mechanically forces a dead short circuit inside the balanced XLR connector, it immediately disables the tracking mechanism for the unit’s Dynamics light—even if the other end of the cable is completely unplugged.

Why an XLR to TS Cable Disables the Dynamics Light

The [Fryette GPDI/IR] The unit’s internal sidechain circuit relies on monitoring the voltage differential between the pins inside that XLR jack to measure signal activity and illuminate the LED.

When you use an XLR to TS cable, the physical wiring of the cable forces Pin 3 (Negative/-) and Pin 1 (Ground) to solder directly together to match the 2-conductor TS plug.

  • The Short-Circuit Effect: By shorting Pin 3 directly to Ground, you are grounding half of the GPDI/IR’s balanced driver circuit.
  • The Voltage Drop: This physical bridge causes an instant, severe drop in the internal sensing voltage.
  • The Metering Failure: The sidechain sensor thinks there is zero signal activity on that path, completely blinding the Dynamics LED tracking circuit. [1]

Because this short circuit happens inside the XLR barrel connected to the Fryette, it kills the circuit immediately, whether the 1/4" end is plugged into something or sitting on the floor.

How to Fix It

To restore full functionality to your Dynamics light and ensure your signal is pristine, you must use a cable that does not short the balanced output pins: [1]

  • The Best Fix: Use a standard, fully balanced XLR to XLR microphone cable connected to a balanced input on your mixer or audio interface.
  • If Your Interface Only Accepts 1/4" Inputs: Use a balanced XLR to TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) cable. A TRS cable maintains three separate conductors, preventing Pin 3 from short-circuiting to Ground. [1]
  • If You MUST Use a TS Unbalanced Input: You will need to use a standard XLR cable running into an external passive DI box, then exit the DI box via a standard 1/4" TS guitar patch cable. The DI box’s internal transformer will isolate the Fryette’s balanced output and prevent the short circuit. [1, 2]
