New PS-100 not acting as I'd expect

I think there may be something wrong with the new PS-100 I just purchased. While everything works, I’ve noticed a couple things I didn’t expect. I’ve had an original Power Station for 10 or 11 years; so I got around to comparing them today because the PS-100 seems to have a couple issues. First thing I noticed is that the original PS is WAY louder. I expected the PS-100 to be considerably louder. (i.e., set PS-100 and original with Volume at noon and the original is WAY louder).

Second, one of my applications is for using this to amplify a small, single-ended amp and make it louder. This works like a charm with the original PS…but with the PS-100, the amp’s output is attenuated greatly–even when the PS-100 is turned off (or turned on but in bypass mode)! When you put the original PS in bypass mode, you get your amp at full volume…so something is up with that.

The Deluxe Reverb doesn’t really exhibit this issue, but, still compared to my original power station, I have to turn the volume up much higher on this PS-100 to achieve unity level with the amp.

I’ve been using the Low input level setting. The two amps I’ve been working with are a Deluxe Reverb and a single-ended Dearmond R5T.

To clarify a bit more. I’ve been trying the PS-100 with two amps so far: a Deluxe Reverb (with the intent of making it quieter) and a little DeArmond R5T, with the intent of making it louder (it’s loaded with a 60W Emi Ragin Cajun). Both amps / speakers are 8 ohm.

Any ideas on what’s goin on here?

Hi Leon,

The PS-100 uses a 12DW7 in the driver/PI position instead of a 12AX7. The 12DW7 is basically a 12AX7 on one side and a 12AU7 on the other. It’s still 100 watts, but knob position wouldn’t be the best way to compare the two. I would recommend watching the Malcontents show we just premiered last night about this exact subject. The Power Station and the switch to 12DW7 is mentioned in the video. I’ll include a link in this post.

Thank You,

Terry
