I have Marshall Super Lead 12series cline that sounds muffled through my PS-2A. It appears to be something with the amplifier section. I have tested using the PS as a load and a line out to another power amp and everything sounds fine.
The muffled tone will also waver a little louder and softer.
Are you saying that when using SPKR OUT the sounds coming from your cab seem to have the treble rolled off? Make sure the impedance switches are making a good contact. If this is tubes, I have not encountered that type of failure before. An audio clip would be useful.
Dan,
Thanks for the response. I think a better way of describing the issue is that the volume fluctuates leading to the muffled sound I described. It doesn’t fluctuate wildly up and down but more like putting a blanket over the cabinet and then taking it off quickly.
When I first turn the unit on, it sounds fine but as it gets warmer after being on for 10-15 mins, this issue arises.
I’m not sure if this is useful information but I had been using the PS-2 as a load and line out for several months when I built my '80s inspired rack. When I recently started using it again with the load and speaker out, I noticed this issue.
I will try to do an audio clip when I get home this evening.
Here are a couple of pictures inside the unit. I did notice these markings on the OT, not sure if they are normal or not. The other side is perfectly smooth.
Thanks for putting up an audio clip, not hearing what you are describing. The Line Out and the Speaker will sound very different that’s pretty normal. You will need to guide us a bit more in terms of what is wrong and what you are comparing it to that it “right”. Until we can do that I encourage you to look at your rig, rebuilt it, simplify it and see how it sounds at each step.
I not doing a good job of explaining the issue. The problem is when I ONLY have the signal path guitar → amp → PS2 → cabinet. The volume fluctuates (almost pulsates) randomly from muffled tone to louder and back.
The rig explanation was to show that everything else seems to be working fine, it seems to be something with the output amp or tubes in the PS2.
