Mods for GPDI/IR less mode gain stage

I have been a long time user of the synergy fryette deliverance ii module which you guys modded this past spring. After the mod I noticed that there was much less noise when using the module in the less gain configuration for crunch or near clean sounds - which increases its utility dramatically. I was wondering if there is way to do a similar modification to the gpdi-ir. Specifically more filtering for the less position as it tends to have a bit of fuzz or distortion underneath the actual note played. I have not experienced this in the more position even at much lower gain settings and I have played around with different gain stagings and settings of the master volume and I’m using lower output pickups without a boost.

Thanks,

Howie

PS I am not talking about getting clean sounds. I am referring to lower gain crunch sounds that don’t have an extra fuzz or buzz sound that surrounds the note.

Howie,

The circuit change that was done to your Deliverance module has already been incorporated into the GPDI/IR design.

We’ll have a look at it though and see if we can find a way to accommodate your request.

It would help to know your preferred guitar, front panel settings and any detail you can add regarding how it behaves with just the guitar straight in.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Using all humbucker guitars – ranging from les Paul with bucker burst 2 and 3’s, custombuckers, to Strat with little '78’s to 70’s tribute explorer. But no active pickups. I am attaching a recording made – guitar straight into unit. gain 2 set to off, deliverance mode – gain 1 is initially set to about 9 o clock and then gradually raised to 1 o clock; bass setting to tight, master volume set to a little under 9 o clock; treble at 4 o clock, middle at 10 o clock and bass rolled to 11 o clock; Halfway through I turned the more setting on and that extra distortion tone seems to resolve. I will also attach a recording of the same type of settings (less version only)

using the synergy deliverance module installed in my syn20 ir – straight to daw.

Thanks,

Howie

Just curious if there was any further consideration about my question for the less mode…

Howie

Hi Howie,

Sorry for the late reply.

That sounds like the normal onset of distortion in the Deliverance preamp, especially when humbuckers are involved.

Some companies go to considerable lengths to eliminate that behavior. In doing so, the natural attack and decay of the instrument often sounds masked and artificial.

The Deliverance module mod is a bit of a different issue. There was a very subtle, but nasty sounding parasitic oscillation that the mod addressed. Otherwise, the module sounds a little more tame because the preamp tube plate voltages are lower than that of the GPDI, and correspondingly, of the full-blown Deliverance amp. The result is that the Deliverance amp and the GPDI, have a little bit more of that pissed off DNA in them.

If you listen to Angus Young when playing semi clean passages, you will hear that exact behavior. That’s one of the things that make his sound so compelling. I get the same feeling listening to your first clip - the anticipation that the fire is about to be released.

Hope that helps your understanding.

Dave

Got it and thanks for the thorough reply!
