someone told me never to use Mesa tubes in other products as they will melt the solder in said product. any truth to that??

Tubes are tubes, and actually there are not many factories in the world that make them. Probably MESA amps had a reputation for biasing the tube a little hot? Maybe this is the reason for the folklore. The important thing about using tubes in the PS-2 is that they are a matched pair. If these 6L6s are old, they may have drifted. I’d just get a new pair. If you want to try them, I think it’s OK. Just keep an eye on them for the first 20 mins when playing.
