How to correctly use Bypass switch when using PS-2A with Amp and IR loader, but no speaker connected?

Hello,

I have a question about how to correctly use Bypass switch under my situation. My signal chain is: tube amp head → PS2A AMP IN → PS2A LINE OUT → IR loader (No cab/speaker connected). This should be the “4. Silent mode” in the manual.

From manual I know that I can use PS2A without AC power in silent mode, but can also with AC power if it’s a hi-power amp head. My question is: when powering on and powering off PS2A, do I need to turn on or off the Bypass switch, respectively?

Thanks in advance!

(* It’s a bit confusing when manual describes the Bypass switch. In my understanding this switch only has two statuses called “OPERATE” (ON) and “BYPASS” (OFF). But manual sometimes involves “Standby” status which makes the reading difficult.)

Hi Itsu,

Welcome to the forum!

If you’re not running a cabinet with a higher power amplifier, you just need to turn the power on. It’s more for the fan in the unit than anything else. You just keep the Power Station in “bypass”. Sorry for the misunderstanding. The manual is stating that the internal amplifier is in “standby” while the switch is in the “bypass” position. It can be a little confusing.

I hope that helps.

Thank You,

Terry

Hi Terry,

Thank you very much for the help!

I just want a further confirmation cuz my new amp is coming today  - (Editied this part. I misunderstood something, my bad.)

So, according to manual page 6:

IMPORTANT: The SPEAKER 1 jack has an open load protection feature. If no cable is connected to this jack the Power Station will remain locked in BYPASS/STANDBY mode regardless of the front panel Standby switch setting. This is done to prevent potential damage to your valuable vintage amp should the speaker cable become disconnected while in Bypass mode.

Does it mean that it doesn’t matter how I set the bypass switch when I power PS2A on and have no cab/speaker connected to PS2A?

Hi Itsu,

It is correct that if nothing is plugged into the speaker jacks, the power amplifier will not come out of standby and will stayed bypassed.

Thank You,

Terry
