After playing for about a 1/2 hr the bottom channel sounded really flat, like no tone at all. I moved the selector switch from Deep to Warm and got a loud uncontrollable squeal. Same thing when moved switch to flat. The top channel didn’t appear to be affected. I shut off PS100 and let it cool down. I opened up the case to inspect the tubes and I saw white chunks of plastic of sorts. Further inspection revealed the white ceramic resistor basically disintegrated and fell off the board and was resting at bottom of case. It was purchased from Guitar Center on October 10, 2023 Serial number: PHFD232813 I have used it without issues until this past weekend. I live in NY and would hope I can have it repaired nearby instead of shipping it to CA. Would I be eligible for a new resistor and tubes under warrantee?
I emailed you but no response as of yet.
Please advise and thank you
Hi @ps100 welcome to the forum!
Thanks for the helpful history and photo.
The way repairs work are really two options:
- How can I send my product to Fryette for a repair (RMA Request)? - #2
- Can I get my Fryette product repaired at a local repair shop?
So you would send it to Fryette; they check everything and return it in a factory-approved state. Apart from shipping, this would be included in your 5-year warranty with Fryette (with proof of purchase, etc.). Unfortunately tubes have a 90-day warranty. So those would be charged if needed for replacing too (if requested by you).
Or you find a local repair tech and get the work done yourself. We would generally assist the repair only by sending out replacement parts. The local tech should be reputable; that is the only requirement on our end.
When you say you emailed, were you just asking the above questions?
Hi Dan,
thank you for your quick response and explanations/instructions. Because of the cost of shipping/insurance, the amount of time to and from CA-NY and the time in your shop, I elected to bring it to a local repair shop (Dave’s Amp Repair in Whippany, NJ). I have used Dave for a few jobs in the past and he really knows his stuff. Hopefully its not a big job to repair. I originally emailed support@fryette.com and I received a response with instructions.
Thank you
If it seems to work fine at first and then starts acting up within an hour or so, tell your tech to try a different set of power tubes. The ones that are in there are nice, but once they hit a certain temperature, they might go into bias runaway. That will suck power out of the power supply which will make the tone go away. If they get hot enough, they can make a pretty scary screeching sound.
We switched to JJ 6550s a couple of years ago because of this issue.
Dave
