Had no volume in Bypass mode

Hi there,
I’m really just here to troubleshoot any potential user error steps. I correctly had my amp going to Amp In of the Fryette, then the Cab Out of the Fryette to my Speaker cabinet. I started up the fryette, letting it warmup for a bit in Bypass mode as I typically do, but immediately notice there was no sound (no hiss - it’s a 1959HW as they do) coming from the cabine. I tried hitting some guitar strings, tweaked volume levels, then got so spooked that I just shut the whole rig down.

The only thing that was different in my workflow this time was that before turning any of the equipment on, this was the first time I had toggled the impedance switches in the back AFTER plugging in the cables. I don’t see how/why that should make any sort of difference, but im not an engineer, so who konws - maybe those switches need to be switched before cables are inserted?

After the shut down, I ended up swapping the cable positions from one to the other (the cable between amp and fryette, now was the one between cab and fryette, and vice versa), then everything powered on just fine.

No damage was done, thankfully.

Any thoughts? I’ve fired up the fryette a dozen or so times before (still relatively new owner) and never had an issue. To be clear, I’m not toally ruling out the a cable wasn’t inserted all the way; i’ll just make doubly sure, next time.

Hi Scott,

In BYPASS mode AMP IN is routed directly to SPKR OUT. So this indicated an issue with the cables, how the cables are plugged in or the amp.

Make sure you are are using the top speaker output jack first!

It is not a problem. It is only a problem if you are playing and the amp is outputting a lot of signal when moving the switch. During the transition from one setting to another, the amp will be temporarily unloaded. That’s the danger and why the advice is to do the setting first.

Here is a checklist you can go through to help. Yes, it is boring and repetitive. But this almost always helps people discover the issue themselves. Power Station: Troubleshooting Guide do the NO SOUND section.

Thank you Dan! Out of curiousity, which “top speaker output jack”? I’m using the PS-100, so just the single speaker out at the top, back of the unit. Maybe a typo there?

And to your other point (apologies - I did the reply function, but it’s not giving me a screen grab of your content in this text box) about switching the impedance in the back. I figured thats bad practice regardless, but a great call out.

As an update, I’ve used the ps-100 several times since this incident and it hasn’t returned. Just got a 2203X and had it rockin’ with the ps this morning!

Next up is the PowerLoad IR so I can use some headphones.

Fryette kills it!

Thanks Dan! Consider this one case closed.
