I had noticed early on that my IR Clip indicator never turned on, and can confirm that regardless of config (with/without speaker, into PS2 etc) and even with all gain maxed, it never turns on. I don’t believe anythin else is wrong (IR out seems to work as intended for instance). Is there anything I can do to test/replace the led myself? Should I send the unit back (from Switzerland to UK…). Should I ignore this (and use my ears instead…)?
Do you notice distortion from the IR unbalanced or balanced outputs? If not, then I think you are simply not reaching the signal levels that will clip the digital circuitry in the IR loader. The LED only indicates the the IR loader input signal is too large, nothing else.
I have to bring my PS2 back home to try again, but even with hot humbuckets, volume maxed on any of the three channel (speaker out into ps2) the led didn’t turn on. Looking again at Michael Nielsen’s video the led flashed at 9 o clock or so with similar settings. I will try to hook it up the same way with the IR out into another amp+cab to listen for distortion, just to confirm.
OK, that’s a good plan. I just took a look at his video and yes, I do see both the clip and dynamics LEDs illuminate from time to time. I would trust your ear. It really is a good thing that it does not turn on and it will be very setup-specific. So it might not be as simple as matching what he did; it will come down to the signal level.
