Hi everybody. Looking to downsize my live setup quite a bit and as I Can not deal with digital devices my search lead me towards the gpdi/ir
My setup is pretty simple , guitar with bkp alnico warpig ( very High output) into boss sd-1 and into amp . Noisegate ,Delay and Volume boost in fx loop . Amp into ir loader and from ir loader to 2x12 cabinet .used to use mic on cab but not Every soundguy out there is good enough to make a good distorted guitar sound , I find . I Only use 1 overdriven sound and Volume boost it for solo thats it .
So I wondered if I could leave amp , cab and IR loader at Home and use my pedals with gpdi/ir
And get the same good guitar sound through the PA and monitors as my current setup.
I know I loope the cab noise on stage but I am running monitors pretty High Volume anyway , I also sing so no matter what I always have monitor in front of me
I want the amp and analog feel When I play and from what I see thats exactly what gpdi/ir gives , alone with the pittbull kind of sound and response , am I correct ?
Question goes Can gpdi/ir handle a Volume boost in the loop for solo or is there another Way to go around it I Havent thought of . I really dig all the features of the gpdi ir and all the multi purpose and usecases it has .
Keep in mind I Will use the ir in gpdi Only , NO CAB on stage
Yeah it will do what you want. I don’t usually boost from my loop, but I do use a volume pedal there w/ delay & reverb and it’s great. So cutting signal is another option. I know you’re trying to get away from digital, but there are a few “programmable” volume options that exist in case whatever you use for boost doesn’t workout. Imagine playing at 88% for rhythm (heel) and 100% for lead (toe) for example. Stuff like that is super easy and the GPDI/IR handles it well. You might enjoy the more/less switch as well for live use. Personally, I find there’s too much volume jump here for live use, but others seem to really like it so YMMV.
Lately, I’ve found that pittbull, G1 12, G2 9, & more is pretty much where I live and I just ride the volume knob. It’s an impressive unit.
Thank you very much for your reply . Also thought og a eq pedal turned Down a coupeer dB and Then switch of for solo . Looked at Brian Nielsens video about the gpdi/ir many times , and I Think I need a little more gain than you .and that was actually what caused this question about the clipping of the ir loader . Seems the more gain on the pitbull the more master has to be turned Down .I am going for Rob Caggiano’s live sound (Volbeat) , and now that we are at it how does it handle an overdrive in front ?
Hi Jimmy, the GPDI/IR will work perfect for what you want to do, and then some more.
I’ve used it that way in a scenario where bringing an amp wasn’t an option, it sounded awesome!
The main difference will be the sound out of the monitor instead of the 212, but since you primarily use that for monitoring your voice, you’ll be even more inclined to keep your voice and guitar in balance than with the 212. That’s a win-win for everybody in the room.
I haven’t tried a boost in the loop yet, but the workaround will work fine.
Hi Peter , thank you for your response . I bought it and took it to a gig this weekend , biggest problem was the clipping in the IR loader and it made it impossible to use the boost as intended , and the 1 watt going to the reactive load don’t have much headroom But that was to be expected though . I found a work around in the last minute before the gig that did work but I am not sure if it is ideal to do it . I took the IR loaded it into audacity and lowerede the Volume -10db and loaded that IR into the gpdi/IR and that made it possible to crank the master Volume a little more to get poweramp saturation and also boost Volume in the loop for solo approx 4-5 dB without the ir loader clipping . I still need to fiddle some more with this setup , being used to a 120 watt with kt88 tubes is quite different in feel and impact , for me at least . And the gain structure is a little different than my redseven leviathan amp. I Will say for recording gpdi/ir is a killer of a device absolutely fantastic . But main purpose is live gigging for me .
