Ghost notes in PS-2

Hi there (new to the forum)
My PS-2 is ghost noting like crazy. I thought that it was the amps, but they sound fine with another attenuator. Ive sent several messages in the past with no reply.

Thanks

Thanks for starting the new post.

Can you also upload an audio clip? Photo of the setup would also be useful to understand connections

Also, could you give details of the PS-2 settings.

Hi there
I have it as an insert in a De lisle amp switcher…
At first i though that it was just the Plexi (1971), but it still does it on my fender and my Bogner XTC. i record from the line out of the PS directly to the sound card. The ghost notes are not noticiable directly, so it didnt bother me that much, but yesterday i just couldnt take it anymore and changed the PS for a Captor X that i also have and it did not do it or if it did it did only on the 71 marshall. Im an electrical engineer and i know a little about all of this not because of the engineering haha, but because im 51 now and ive been used to open my old amps and work on them.

Im suspecting the filter caps or who knows if a tube. Because this has been the problem in past situations.

Thanks very much

We do work with local repair shops if they need assistance. I’d suggest dropping it off somewhere near you. We can give limited support to end users because it can turn into a hand-holding exercise. But we will try our best if you really wish to service this yourself. Like any engineering discipline, experience makes a huge difference. You could poke around at it all weekend or just drop it off to someone skilled that will fix it in an hour. Filter caps are not an unreasonable place to start for ghosting. I’d encourage you to have a metric to compare against. A before-and-after recording will be useful to judge the fix.

Im pretty sure that i can work with it. Ive been doing it in mine for around 25 years. I just wanted to present the problem to you since there was guy that had the same issue and he told me that you guys fix it.
Its the one whom i replied in his thread.
Ill start by the basics (changing its 6l6’s).

I asked the guy from the thread and he told me that he doesnt know what it was but that he sent it to you guys and you fixed it.

This is the guy

Hi @Telegibstrat

I just reread the post. Yes, he sent it in. I was not involved in the repair so I have no idea what they did. Someone from the shop will need to comment.

Hi there
My PS-2 stopped doing anything today. No DI and no attenuation. The internal fuse is ok.
Please let me know

Hello again Tele

Run through this trouble shooting guide here carefully step by step, if you get it the end it should tell you your PS will need a service, or will help you discover the problem. Happy to help with any details.

Done… nothing at all

Hi Tele,

OK, I need a bit more information. Does your unit have power? You just have no sound? You have completed the no-sound checklist then?

  1. Check input cable.
  2. Check volume controls.
  3. Make sure the amplifier volume and/or gain controls are turned up.
  4. Unplug the FX loop, check for sound.
  5. Connect a jumper cable from FX send directly to FX return; check for sound.
  6. Connect a jumper cable from Line Out directly to Line In; check for sound.
  7. PLEASE NOTE: When you have remove the feet to install a rack mount kit, DO NOT REINSTALL JUST THE FEET FIXING SCREWS. This will damage the unit internally and will require factory service. See Rack Kit instructions for details
  8. Check speaker cable to see if it is disconnected or shorted.
  9. Make sure that the impedance selector is fully engaged in its detent.
  10. Check the standby switch.
  11. Check for a blown speaker.
  12. Check the mains fuse, and replace if necessary. If it blows again, refer to qualified service personnel.

Do you have a spare set of power tubes you can swap in to see if it is those?

Ive had this unit for about 5 years now.
Just in case; I know my way around amps. Ive been dealing with them for a long time now and not ro sound arrogant, but i have an Electrical Engineering degree. So if you point me in the right direction after answer your questions then i can maybe fix it myself. I tested in the attenuator loop of my two switchers and it did not work also

Answers to your questions:

1-all cables are perfect
2-neither volume nor prescience or depth work while having an amp through the “amp in” and the “speaker out” jacks
3-The amplifiers have been working perfectly with it. The PS-2 has been in the loop of a KHE amp switchers for years now.
4-Nowadays I never use the effects loop and the times i did it worked perfectly
5-not working
6-not working
7-there have never been screws there after i took them out
8-speaker cables replaced and nothing
9-impedance selector at 8ohm for every amp ….every amp set to 8ohms and the cab is an 8ohm cab
10- That is something that ive not checked.. but nothing seems to work. For example; the toggles for the warm, brite etc Eq dont do anything.
11-the speaker cant be blown as the amps sound normal just like there is no attenuation. The fryette controls dont do anything; none of them.
12-mains fuse ok and internal fuse also…

Thanks

Hi there Dan
Any news on my situation?
Thanks

OK,

So fuses are fine, you have checked they are not blown, all cables are fine. So we have eliminated other more basic issues.

Do you have a spare set of power tubes you can swap in to see if it is those?
