I have an impedance setting question regarding connecting a Fryette XL II to a Power Station 100, then running out to speakers.
Current Signal Chain
Guitar & Preamp: Suhr Standard Plus → Pedalboard → SMS Classic Tube Preamp → Fryette XL II → 2 JBL Speakers
Speakers:
JBL D120 (8 Ω) on Channel A
JBL K120 (8 Ω) on Channel B
Settings:
SMS at ~25%
XL II at ~40% (loud but clear, responsive, good practice level)
Result: Clean, high-headroom, Jerry Garcia–style tone. The JBLs sound excellent.
New Addition
I purchased a Power Station 100 on 09/14/25 (delivery expected 09/18/25). Planning to integrate it immediately.
New Signal Chain
Suhr Standard Plus → Pedalboard → SMS Classic Tube Preamp → Fryette XL II (Channel A only, Mono 4 Ω) → Power Station 100 → 2 JBL speakers wired in parallel at 4 Ω
Question
I’ve read the manuals and watched several videos, so I’m comfortable with PS100 setup in general.
However, the impedance instructions are unclear:
Manual states: “Set impedance to match both the speaker and the load amplifier.”
Then adds: “Simply set the impedance selector switch for the impedance required by your amplifier.”
Given my new setup (2 JBLs in parallel at 4 Ω, XL II in mono at 4 Ω):
Should the Power Station AMP impedance be set to 4 Ω (to match the speakers),
Or 8 Ω (to match the XL II’s native power rating)?
I want to make sure everything is configured properly to avoid damaging gear.
I would run the LXII at 8 Ohms (personal preference) and the “Amp In” impedance on the Power Station at 8 Ohms, and run the Power Station “Spkr Out” impedance at 4 Ohms to match the load of the speakers. You could do 4 Ohms on the Power Station “Amp In” and switch the LXII to 4 Ohms as well. That’s completely up to you. They will both work without an issue.
In the next month, I’m going to be running two 2x12 Cabinets of 8 ohm JBL K, D and E 120 Speakers (Mixed).
I decided to exchange the PS100 for a PS2A, as it has 2 speaker outputs, vs the single speaker output on the PS100.
The first 2x12 cab with JBL D & K120s is hooked up and working.
It is output via Channel A, from my Fryette LX ii, set at mono, 4 ohm speaker output. The LX ii Channel B is currently unused, while I await delivery of 2 JBL E120s and second 2x12 cabinet.
My PS2 is also hooked up and working with the first 2x2 cab (sounds good too!!).
The PS2 is configured with Amp input impedance of 4 ohms and speaker input impedance of 4 ohms, again only running one channel output.
In other words, all settings are “by the book” per the instruction manual.
With that background, my question is:
Should I leave the LX ii output speaker Impedance at 4 ohms… or… can it alternatively be set to 8 ohms (as you suggested as an option with the PS100?)
Does setting the Lxii impedance to 8 ohms make any noticeable difference in sound quality running into a 2x12 cab via PS2 set at 4 ohms?
Does the above configuration shorten tube life on either the LXII or PS2A or negatively affect speaker life?
Since I’m new to the Fryette Family of equipment, and there are many configuration options, please let me know recommended best practice and I’ll adhere to it
