Fractal FM3 into "FX send" unit works fine! Regular amp into "Amp In" = no attenuation, no loop

Greetings, checking to see if anyone has a suggestion for my problem. I’ve been using this unit to power my FM3 into a regular cab and it works fine for that. What doesn’t work though is running a regular amp through the “Amp In”. There’s a signal going through but no attenuation and no FX loop.

Thx for your time!

Welcome to the forum!.

Is the FM3 connected to the Line In while you’re trying to run the amp?

Dave

Hi, and thx for your response… I’ve tried using it with just the amp > ps amp in and the ps speaker out > cab connection with no luck. The FM3 was not connected.

Good morning, no, the FM3 was not connected at all when I tested the standard setup (regular amp to “amp in” and PS2a “speaker out” to cab.)

OK, which product are we talking about?
Please provide the serial number.

Next, are you connecting your FM3 to the Line In or FX Return?

If it’s the Line In, try this:

Connect your amp to the Amp In and connect a short jumper cable from the Line Out jack to the Line In jack.

If you are using the FX Return, try this:

Connect your amp to the Amp In and connect a short jumper cable from the FX Send jack to the FX Return jack.

Thanks,

Dave

It’s a PS2a, s/n PSJ215660

I tried the jumper cable solutions without any change.

I also went back to using it as just an FM3 “re-amplifier” with the the FM3 going into the Effects Send and it still performs that function, I can raise and lower the volume, etc. Unfortunately though it will not attenuate a regular amp plugged into the “Amp In”.

Is this something I can send in for repair? I’m not the original owner but I don’t mind paying repair costs…

It’s critical you have an extremely basic setup for the following:

  1. Ensure you amp works properly by itself, without connecting it to the Power Station. What is the amp make and model?
  2. No FX
  3. Verify that all your instrument, speaker and jumper cables all work reliably.

Please go through the checklist steps Power Station: Troubleshooting Guide

I’d like you to do the following checks:

  1. No sound
  2. Won’t switch to operate
  3. Effects not operating

Sorry if this sounds a little repetitive. It’s really important we understand your setup and eliminate mundane issues before considering a repair.

I understand, thx.

The amps work properly by themselves, I’ve tried several, as do the cables hooking them up.

When connecting thru the main “Amp In” the signal is going thru to the cab but there is no attenuation and there are no effects going thru either.

I’ve opened up the unit and checked the fuse which is still intact.

Best

David

Hi David,

Thanks for verifying all that, it seems you cannot go to operate mode even through all fuses are intact. You have also gone through the 9 steps in the NO SOUND trouble shooting guide.

Do you have a way of verifying the tubes by swapping with another pair?

The volume control has no effect?

Also the reactive load toggle switches (put in flat, and other settings etc)

You can send it to Fryette for a service, but if it turns out to be tubes then it will be unnecessarily expensive.

Hello Dan,

thank you for the follow-up.

I have checked the mains fuse as well as the one under the hood, both are in tact.

I have checked the vacuum tubes and I have also replaced them with a different set just in case, no change, unit still doesn’t attenuate.

Volume control has no affect.

Various reactive load settings tried, flat, up, down without any change.

Having exhausted these checks I’m thinking a diagnostic repair is all that is left. Could be a component gone bad. Please advise next step.

Thank you,
David

Hi

OK, then yes we have exhausted all reasonable debugging steps. Next would be to request an RMA, see for how to do that,

This unit works perfectly here.

Is it possible you were using the bottom speaker out jack?

Please see manual page 6, first paragraph.

https://fryette.com/content/Power_Station_PS2A_Manual.pdf

That doesn’t necessarily explain how you could be getting sound using it as a power amp for your FM3, unless you had the whole rig set up differently for that application.

Dave

I don’t recall if it was only the bottom jack I was plugging into while trying to use it was an attenuator. It’s entirely possible, and it was two separate setups from when I had it hooked up for use with the FM3.

OK, please check and make sure you use the TOP input jack.

Looks like it’s operator error. If there’s anything to check or upgrade since it’s already there please do and let me know what I owe you. I’m a little surprised I never used the upper speaker out but I can see that happening,
