Effects Loop Limitations

New user here. I realize that I can only use the Amp In or the Preamp In (Cyclops would fix that). But is it the case that the effects loop only works if there is a speaker cable out connected to load?

I wanted to use a preamp in, as well as the effects loop, but not necessarily plugging it into a speaker cab. Mostly I use Fractal IRs. But it seems that when I don’t plug in the speaker cable out, then the effects loop doesn’t work.

I’m guessing it’s user error, but can’t seem to rectify the problem.

Have you tried connecting the speaker output to the amp input with a speaker cable? Not sure if it for sure solve your issue but, I know it’s safe and use this method to thicken up preamps I’m using while recording direct to daw . Just make sure the ohms match on the in/out.
