Do 2/50/2 PTs of EU 230V units have an internal 240V tap?

Hi,

I ordered a Fryette 2/50/2 from Spain, not realising my 247V wall voltage here in the UK could be too much for it. I think that’s the reason I’m getting fuse issues on the B+/HT lines.

I’m currently looking for Voltage Stabilisers that will help me reduce the voltage to my entire rig to ~230V, but that rig also includes a lot of 240V equipment, so I’m a bit concerned about brown’ing them to make 2/50/2 happy.

So I was wondering, would it be easier to change the input voltage of 2/50/2 instead? Do the PTs in these EU units have an internal tap for 240V that can be re-wired to?

That way, I can use the voltage stabiliser to calm the wall down to 240V and keep everything happy, if possible?

Thanks,

The 2/50/2 will be OK operating at 240V. Even your 247 reading is well within normal tolerance (230V +/- 10%), so it should be OK.

If you’re having trouble with the front panel DC fuses, try F630mA instead of F500mA.

Dave

Thanks for the reply David! Good to know that it should be fine/operable at 247V, and I’ll try the larger fuses if I keep getting issues.

Just for the sake of knowledge, I was wondering if you know the answer to my original question?

While within tolerances, I assume -maybe wrongly- that 240/247V on a 230V tap might run the EL34s a bit hot for reduced lifespan and if the 240V tap exists, I’d be happy to take the amp to my tech to re-wire it to that for the next maintenance.

I mean I assume that’s the reason models that are sold in UK are set to 240V? (like my PS2A)

Hi Darkscarf,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, I needed to check some technical information with the shop.

The good news is that yes, it can be rewired to support 240V. The bad news is that we cannot support that change as an end user. You would have to get it done by a local repair shop. Anything to do with power and high voltage can have potentially lethal consequences, so we insist it is performed by a professional. Sorry if this sounds too strict.

PM me your approximate location, and I’ll see if we know anyone in your area. Or if you have a reputable local shop, it would be fine to send it there for the work, and we can assist with any technical support they need.

Hi Dan,

No problem at all, thanks for coming back to me on this.
This is great news, thanks! And you are totally right to be strict, no one without a qualification belongs near the innards of these things with caps large enough to fry human beings, regardless of how well they are guided.
I live around Reading in the UK, and while I am lucky enough to know a good technician in the area, it would be great if you could share the shops you guys know in the area for additional options.
Anywhere around the London and Oxford belt, and surrounding areas are suitable.

Thanks a lot!

OK will PM you some options.
