DI recording with 2/50(90)/2 (no line out)

I would like to record (in stereo) directly into my interface, while simultaneously powering two speakers (16ohms each) using the 2/50/2 Power amp.

Should I:

  1. Send 2 speaker outs (one form each channel) from the 2/50/2 into my stereo DI box. Then connect the speakers using the ‘thru’ outs on DI box. The line outs from the DI box will connect to my interface. Would I keep the impedance at 16ohms/channel?

or

  1. Send 2 of the speaker outs (one from each channel) directly to my speakers as normal, and send the other two speaker outs into a stereo DI box, and then from the DI box to my interface. In this scenario, how should I set the impedance on each channel of the power amp? Keep Impedance at 16ohms/channel? Or do I need to decrease impedance to 8ohms to account for the two additional outputs (total 4) in use?

Hello and welcome to the Fryette Forum! Please tell me what preamp and or processor that you are using on the front end of this rig? DI boxes are typically designed for instrument or line level signals, not amplified speaker signals. You could connect directly to your audio interface then use alternate outputs on your audio interface to send the left and right signals to the 2/50/2 power amp. Please elaborate on your gear and what you are hoping to accomplish so I can assist you with determining the most practical configurations to choose from. Cheers! Gil

Hello,

first of all - wow -what amazing customer service! Your reply was so quick and insightful.

To answer your question,
I have a few different preamps - Benson Vincent, Orange Rocker 15, Micro Terror, Vox ac30, and some SS fenders … Each has it’s own power amp which I am bypassing in favor of the (stereo) 2/50/2.

I have used stere pedals going to separate amplifiers before.
I want to get a more perfect stereo image by using the stereo effects after my preamps, and in front of a stereo power amp.
The idea is to go out of the power amp in stereo into a matched pair of hi wattage, very clean (transparent as possible) speakers, resulting in detailed stereo image of the pedal tones that is interactive with preamps as well as the tube-driver power amp.
The same tube-driven stereo signal from the power amp that I am interacting with in a loud room - I want to capture this directly into the interface, without micing the cabinets.

If I go into the DI first, then split to the Interface and power amp, my ears can will all the goodness from the power amp in the room, but my interface will only hear the preamp and pedals, minus the interaction with the 2/50/2.

Maybe with something like CAPTOR X (stereo /attenuator/loadbox/DI)

Am I making sense?

I think the LXII solves this dilemma, but I am hoping to capture a 2/50/2 or 2/90/2 in a similar fashion.

Yes, I understand what you are wanting here. The proper way to achieve this is to tap both the right and left speaker outputs separately in order to maintain the actual stereo signal that you are creating with your preamps, amps and effects before sending the signal to the stereo power amp and out to the two speaker cabs. You need two identical devices such as a Two-Notes Captor x 2,
or what I would highly recommend which would be the Fryette PL-IR x 2. Yes, two PL-IR’s is an expensive proposition but you would be extremely pleased with the results. Please let me know if I can assist you in any way. Gil
