Fan noise is sometimes annoying/distracting, so I’m wondering under what conditions the fan could be disconnected. I’m using low wattage amps (18-22 W) at bedroom volume, and the PS-2A is rated for up to 200 W at the input. Is the fan necessary with this setup? It looks like a single plug can be pulled on the circuit board near the front to disable the fan. Am I asking for trouble if I do this?
The main reason we don’t recommend this is because the tube puts out a load of heat too and without the fan moving air, the heat can build up.
You can use the PS-2A without any power, just a load box with a balanced line out, for low-power amps like yours. But in this case the tubes are off, so less heat is generated inside.
So I do not recommend it. At the end of the day it’s all about keeping the inside of the box at a sensible temperature. Heat puts stress on components and shortens their life.
OK. Thanks for the guidance.
