Blonde Bassman sounds weird with Fryette PS-2A

Hello, I own a Fryette Power Station PS-2A, which I use extensively with my Marshall 1959HW and my Hiwatt 103. I’ve been using it with great results and without any issues.

Last week I bought a 1964 Blonde Bassman, which I’m very happy with. Yesterday I tried using it with the Fryette, but it sounded strange — a bit fuzzy, almost like a silicon Fuzz Face with the bias set low and the guitar volume rolled back.

The Fryette was set to the 2/4 ohm position. Am I possibly doing something wrong?

I read somewhere that it might sound better on the 8 ohm setting, but I’m hesitant to try that without being sure. I definitely don’t want to damage the amp.

Do you have any advice or an idea what might be going on?

Hi @Talesmusic and welcome to the forum,

Glad to hear you are enjoying the PS-2A with the Marshall and Hiwatt, let’s figure out what is going on with Bassman. What is the impedance at the back of the Bassman, 4 Ohms?

Also, what is your volume level? Do you hear these sounds coming through the speaker?

What can happen with the Power Station is that we tend to attach notes much harder because the overall volume has been reduced; this can clip the circuit and cause distortion if the volume on the Bassman is very high.

I would experiment a bit with volume levels and see if it goes away.

If you can also equalise the volume of the Bassman and the PS-2A using the bypass/operate switch. If you hear something specific to the Power Station in that case please try and record it so we can hear what is going on and provide more adivce.

Sorry for the late reply. I recently took the amp to my tech, who gave it a proper going-over. Yesterday I tried it again with the Power Station, and it seems like everything now sounds as it should. I’m not sure what was going on, but it looks like everything is fine now  Thanks!
