Audio Quality Issues

Hello, new here! I recently picked up a used PL-IR off Reverb to replace my CAB M and Captor, and I’m wondering if there is something wrong with it.

As some others have posted, I have a hiss when using with headphones. It’s always there and the level of the hiss never changes when adjusting amp and IR levels. The hiss is there when my amp is on standby. I’ve also adjusted the aux levels and ground. I haven’t used the analog outs yet.

I exported the IR’s from my Friedman IR-X and loaded a few into the user presets on the PL-IR. These IRs sound tremendously different than they do on the IR-X. I also loaded these same IR’s into my CAB M and they are extremely close to how they sound in the IR-X. They are also much quieter and thinner sounding on the PL-IR than the stock IRs. I’ve adjusted the switches, and I can improve it but it just doesn’t sound good. Not clipping.

The stock IRs, while better, also just don’t sound great. Kinda distorted in an unpleasant way, crackly.

My signal chain is Guitar>BE-100>PL-IR

Again, I’ve only used headphones at this point. But I’m also comparing to using headphones with my CAB M, and it sounds great with no hiss. Gate is disabled on the CAB M.

Am I doing something wrong? Did I get sold a defective unit?

Hi @PitBeef and welcome to the forum!

I don’t have too much experience with the PL-IR and headphones out. Could you go out of the balanced line out into DAW and see if it still sounds the same? Let’s take debugging forward from there.

Hey Dan. Thanks so much. I’ll try to do that tonight.

OK, dead silent through the IR Out, sounds great. The uploaded audio is from the headphone output. It wasn’t as annoying through the DAW for some reason, but it’s still there.

I’m going to try to reload the Friedman IR’s, something went wrong. I loaded an Ownhammer IR and it sounds excellent, and the included IRs also sound better through the IR out.

Maybe just the headphone output?
