Burning smell from PS-2 after use

Hello,

I need some advice.

Yesterday, I needed to record my Orange Terror Bass amp, and I read that, despite being a hybrid amplifier, it must always be connected to a load - just like tube amps.
Having no cabinet available, I thought I could use my Fryette PS-2 for that purpose. However, I completely overlooked two important facts:

  • The PS-2 is not designed to work with Class-D amplifiers
  • The maximum power the PS-2 can absorb is 200W, while the Orange Terror Bass delivers up to 500W
After playing for 1 or 2 minutes with the volume knob set to 3, I noticed a burning smell coming from the PS2. I immediately stopped playing, but I’m now concerned I may have damaged the unit.
I would be happy to take it to a tech, but here in France, it’s difficult to find someone with the expertise to service such equipment.
Is there anything I could do to test the unit myself? Maybe by taking some measurements with a multimeter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jerome, Thanks for sending the pics! It would appear that there are no actual burnt components, and since you noticed it right away you probably prevented any real damage from occurring. I recommend that you play test the PS-2 now with one of your other guitar amps and a cab to see if it functions normally. The burnt smell is usually just the silk-screened ink on the tubes and or other components burning off a little bit when things get hot but this is somewhat normal and to be expected under high heat conditions. Keep an eye on things but you should be ok at this point. Cheers! Gil
